Successful launch of Masterplan Filmtalent
Producer/director Elbe Stevens and Lumière Cinema Maastricht join forces for this new initiative for the Limburg film industry. Last Thursday was the official launch of the Masterplan Filmtalent, with an introductory gathering at Lumière Cinema Maastricht attended by the internationally acclaimed actor Derek de Lint, in which a number of young talents presented themselves. These regional talents get the chance to shadow the production of some short films.
The Masterplan Filmtalent is a four-year project in which young filmmakers realise a number of short films with experienced professionals. Each year, the Masterplan will make three short films with a new batch of students or recent graduates. The selected talents collaborate with professionals from the Dutch and Belgian film industry, allowing them to gain valuable experience for a future career in the sector.
The first selection of young talent takes place in the coming months. Representatives from the courses: Communication and Media Design and ABK Visual Communication at Zuyd University; The Theatre Academy Maastricht, Arcus College Heerlen; the Media, Arts & Design Academy in Genk; and the Cinesud platform for media professionals, are all involved.
The preliminary selection consists of Jeroen Mourmans (UvA/Cinesud), Sophie van de Pol (Maastricht Theatre Academy), Bart van de Woestijne (Maastricht Theatre Academy), Arthur Gorissen (HKU/Cinesud), Thomas Baerten (MAD-faculty Genk) and Steven de Graaff (MAD-faculty Genk).
For the selection procedure, the young filmmakers propose projects or ideas for short films. The Masterplan Filmtalent is a unique opportunity for them to make their ideas into professional short films. In December, a final selection will be chosen for filming based on the selected talents’ proposed ideas. Filming starts in the spring. In June, the short films are premiered.
This initiative and the resulting short films shed new light on the creative sector in Limburg and are thus part of a broader development. With these productions, professionals from the Randstad and the Euregio experience what it’s like to work on location in Limburg. The completed productions also serve as calling cards for the Euregio as a film location and as a productive working environment. As such, the Masterplan Filmtalent contributes to the professionalization and increasing the visibility of Limburg’s creative sector.
The Masterplan Filmtalent has had a successful pilot year. The first two short films, Flight of Life and Past by director Elbe Stevens, have already been screened at various festivals.
